How to become an assessor?
All assessors must be listed on The Pony Club Coach Database and fulfill the relevant requirements for the level of responsibility they are undertaking.
E Test
- Can be selected from within the Branch or outside of the Branch.
- No specific requirements for being selected, but should be familiar with the levels they are assessing as well as the level above and below that test.
D Test
- An assessor can be selected from within the Branch but preferably from outside the Branch for best practice.
- There are no specific requirements, but assessors should be familiar with the levels required for the test they are assessing, and the level above and below that test.
- Assessors must have attended a D/D+ Assessor Training Workshop and it is recommended that they shadow an experienced Assessor at least once before assessing independently.
- Centres – For D to C Test in your Centre, please invite an assessor from your local Branch.
D+ Test

- Assessors should be more experienced but again, DCs can select whoever they feel is suitable for this.
- For D to C test, please invite an assessor from your local Branch for the Members’ test.
- Before assessing at this level you must have attended a C Test Assessor Training Workshop and following the workshop it is recommended that you shadow an experienced Assessor at least once and then co-assess before assessing independently.
Road Rider
- Two assessors will be required.
- A riding assessor who is at least a C test assessor and an experienced driver and a road safety assessor who is a Pony Club assessor, an experienced driver and has studied The Pony Club Road Rider DVD and Junior Road Rider book.
C+ Test
- Two assessors are required; one of whom must be a B test assessor, and one must be external to the Branch (The area rep will be able to help find you a suitable person) in some cases, one assessor can be used for C+. But they must then be a B Test assessor and external to the Branch.
- For C+ test at Centres, please invite assessors from your local Branch for the Members’ test, one of them must be a B test assessor, the area rep or Centre Co-ordinator will be able to help find you a suitable person.
- New Assessors at this level will be required to have attended a C+ Assessor Training Workshop, and it is recommended that following the workshop, they should then shadow an experienced assessor at least once, and then co-assess with an experienced assessor before assessing independently.
B Test
- The Area Rep will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of the panel of well-qualified experienced assessors in the area.
- Their names must be submitted to The Pony Club Office, and assessors must be selected from this approved list.
- All ‘B’ assessors must attend a study day every two years if they wish to remain on the panel.
- New ‘B’ test assessors should probation at a minimum of two ‘B’ tests before they can be approved by the area rep and join the ‘B’ test panel.
Lungeing Test
Assessed by an AH Test assessor.
AH Test
- Four assessors, taken from the AH test assessors panel will assess a maximum of eight candidates at each test.
- An additional AH Chief assessor may be present, sent from The Pony Club Office to ensure uniformity of the standard of assessment.
- New AH assessors should probation a minimum of three AH Tests before they can be approved by the Area Rep and Chief assessor and join the AH test panel.
A Test
- Three assessors, taken from the A Test assessors panel, will assess a maximum of eight candidates at each test.
- An additional A Test panel assessor may be present, sent from The Pony Club Office to ensure uniformity of the standard of assessment.
